The establishment of the West Bengal Urdu Academy was implemented on April 1, 1987, under the Department of Higher Education, Government of West Bengal. The Government of West Bengal registered the Urdu Academy as a society under the West Bengal Society Registration Act, 1860, through a resolution on March 8, 1891. Later, the State Government made the academy an influential part of the Department of Minority Affairs and Madrasah Education, Government of West Bengal.
Objectives of the Academy
To promote and encourage the Urdu language and literature in the state.
To assist and advise in implementing the state's plans related to the promotion and publication of Urdu.
To translate and publish classical works of Bengali language and literature into Urdu, as well as to publish articles by prominent Urdu scholars on various topics in book form.
To promote Urdu language and literature, the academy prioritizes providing scholarships, free coaching centers, and book grants to students of Urdu-medium schools, re-publishing literary and rare books, organizing book fairs, poetry readings, dramas, seminars, workshops, and linguistic classes.
